Dental Spacing
Spaces between the teeth can be caused by a discrepancy between the size of the teeth and the jaws, a tongue thrust habit, missing teeth or
periodontal problems. Closing spaces during treatment is relatively easy, but retaining space closures, (especially when there is a big space between the two upper front teeth
known as a diastema) is difficult. Adjunctive treatment involving frenectomy and fiberotomy (removal of the frenum and gum tissues around the diastema) may be needed together
with fixed retention of the teeth involved.
Problem:
Class I malocclusion with upper dental spacing and mild lower crowding in 28 yr old male. Deep and impinging overbite present.
Treatment:
Non-extraction treatment with full braces for 22 months. Fixed retention between the upper 2 front teeth.
Problem:
Class II Div 1 malocclusion with upper dental spacing
and a deep and impinging overbite in an 8y 7m old girl.
Treatment:
Phase I treatment with upper partial braces for 12 months. Retainer wear is very important to keep the spaces
closed.
Problem: Class I malocclusion with upper and lower dental
spacing in a 42 yr old female.
Treatment:
Non-extraction treatment with full braces for 20 months. Fixed retention between the upper 2 front teeth plus
a removable retainer to keep spaces closed. The lower spaces are retained with a lower bonded cuspid to cuspid retainer.
